Overview of Bracknell
The town of Bracknell is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 45 miles that would take around 53 minutes by taxi via the M25, M3 and A322. Bracknell is located in the county of Berkshire and even though its roughly 10 miles from Windsor and 30 miles from central London it has plenty of countryside views as the South and East sides of Town are surrounded by Swinley and Crowthorne Woods.
Bracknell, as a site, has a long standing history regarding settlement, with the town still showing signs of these early settlers, for example, there is a bronze age Round Barrow at Bill Hill, The Quelm Stone (a standing stone) is located North East of the town and an Iron Age hill fort called Ceasar's Camp is just South West of the Town. One of the oldest buildings in the town is the 'Old Manor' public house, a 17th century brick manor house featuring a number of priest holes. Next door once stood the 'Hind's Head' coaching inn, where it is said Dick Turpin used to drink. It is believed that there were once underground tunnels between the two, along which the famous highwayman could escape from the authorities.
In more recent years Bracknell has expanded and the Town Centre has undergone several regeneration projects. It has been successful in attracting high-tech industries and is now home to companies such as Panasonic, Hewlett Packard, Siemens, Cable and Wireless and many more. Bracknell also enjoys sporting links, with a large leisure centre, which includes swimming and athletics facilities, Coral Reef Water Park, the Downshire Golf Complex, the Bracknell Lawn Tennis Club, The John Nike Leisuresport Complex houses a dry ski slope aswell as an ice rink. Bracknell Town F.C. are members of the Football League Division One East, and play their home matches at Larges Lane and The Bracknell Bees Ice Hockey Club are former national champions.
Attractions worth a visit in the Bracknell area include The Look Out Discovery Centre - hands on science for children (which also has a fantastic outdoor play area), 'Go Ape at Bracknell' a zip wire forest adventure, Coral Reef Water Park, Lily Hill Park Estate is full of Victorian Grandeur and is set in beautifully landscaped gardens and woodland. As well as South Hill Park Arts Centre, a magnificent 18th Century mansion house and modern Theatre, with a year round programme of theatre, music, dance, film, exhibitions, workshops and courses.
