Overview of Havering

The London Borough of Havering is located East of Heathrow Airport a distance of around 60 miles a journey that would take around 1 hour 10 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is situated in Northeast London and forms part of outer London it has a population of 237,900 according to 2011 statistics.

Havering takes its name from the Royal Liberty of Havering-atte-Bower, created in 1465 and surviving until 1892. The Liberty meant priveleged freedoms and its own court of law for all inhabitants. It has a long history of royal connections with Havering Palace which was a primary residence of Edward the Confessor and also used by Charles I. Until the 18th Century it was an agricultural centre with Romford market being an outlet for local tradesmen. The area attracted the wealthy classes who built many of the great manor houses such as Bower House, Rainham Hall, Hare Hall, Fairkytes, Harrow Lodge and Langtons. The Victorian age brought the railways and new industries in Rainham all contributed to the growth and prosperity of the area.

There are a variety of historical and leisure activities on offer in the area including Upminster Tithe Barn Agricultural and Folk Museum-15th century thatched barn, Mystery Walks of London, Wellgate Community Farm, Upminster Windmill, The Millennium Centre-has a wide range of public events and activities, Thames Chase Forest Centre, Eastbury Manor House and Rainham Hall.
