Overview of Bracknell
The town of Bracknell is located West of Heathrow Airport a journey of 28 miles that would take around 30 minutes by taxi via the M4. It is a town in the Borough of Bracknell Forest in Berkshire, and has a population of 50,131 according to the 2001 Census. The name is derived from 'Braccan Heal' which is though to have meant 'Nook of land belonging to a man called Bracca'. It is situated between the towns of Windsor, Reading and Maidenhead and the town is surrounded by Swinley Woods and Crowthorne Woods.
The history of the town is full of Royal connections due to encompassing the town of Easthampstead which has a long history, Easthampstead Park was a royal hunting Lodge and the place where Catherine of Aragon was sent prior to her divorce. Buildings of historical interest are the public houses with 'The Old Manor' dating back to the 17th Century, according to town legend Dick Turpin frequented the Hinds Head pub that used to be opposite. Other landmarks of interest are the Quelm Stone and Ceasar's Camp an Iron Age Hill Fort built between 2500 - 2700 years ago.
Today the town is a centre for many large companies manufacturing hi-tech products and is home to a number of large Business Parks and Industrial Estates with the head-offices of two major companies Waitrose and BMW. There are many places of interest in Bracknell and surrounding areas such as 'The Lookout' which is to the South of the town that visitors can climb to the top to see the views of the local area nearby is the 'Coral Reef' that has swimming, water park and spa facilites. For sporting activites The John Nike Centre with dry slope skiing and ice skating facilites. Take a visit to South Hill Park a red brick mansion of the Victorian period that is now used as an Arts Centre.
