Overview of Camden

The London Borough of Camden is located East of Heathrow airport a distance of 20 miles that would take around 30 minutes by taxi via the M4. It is situated in inner London and the southern areas make up part of central London. It has a population of 220,300 according to 2011 Statistics.

The borough was created in 1965 from the areas of Holborn, Hampstead and St Pancras and is Londons 7th smallest borough. Saxon Charters were found to represent boundaries that still form part of thost that exist today and it was named after Charles Pratt the 1st Earl of Camden who began the development of Camden Town in 1791. Three of Londons central railway terminals are located in the borough being Euston, St Pancras and Kings Cross. There is a high number of schools for various age groups and 11% of its population are students which is the highest proportion in the Capital.

The area began as being heavily forested with the rivers of the Fleet, Tyburn and Westbourne keeping the land fertile. The Domesday Survey describes the areas that correspond with those of today, with manors of Tothele (Tottenham Court Road), Rugmere, St Pancras, Hampstead and Holborn mentioned that were agricultural with its settlers keeping pigs in the forest. Today Camden has 39 Conservation areas which cover half of the borough.
