Overview of Wantage

The town of Wantage is located West of Heathrow airport a distance of 60 miles that would take around 1 hour 10 minutes by taxi via the M24 and M4. It is situated in the Vale of the White Horse in Oxfordshire and has a population of 9,767 according to the 2001 Census.

The name is thought to mean 'decreasing River' and in the 9th Century King Alfred the Great was born at a palace there. In the 19th Century Lord Wantage was involved in founding the British Red Cross Society and paid for the statue of King Alfred the Great that stands in the Market Place. In the 18th Century Wantage was a major centre of the wool trade and the water powered mill and an undershot water wheel are still standing in the town.

There are many attractions for visitors when staying in Wantage such as The Vale & Downland Museum and Visitor Centre, The Parish Church of Staints Peter and Paul, Didcot Railway Centre, Tom Brown's School Museum and Farmer Gow's.
