Overview of Aldershot

The town of Aldershot is located West of Gatwick airport at a distance of 44 miles that would take around 50 minutes by taxi via the M25, A3 and A31. It is situated in the county of Hampshire and has a population of over 33,800.

The name may be derived from the name of the 'Alder' trees found in the area and dates back to an Anglo-Saxon settlement, with references to the town listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. Aldershot is known for its connection with the British Army - It was at the time of the Crimean War (1854) that Aldershot experienced rapid growth from a small village to Victorian Town, with its heath land becoming an established Army base and the towns population more than quadrupling over the next 10 years. Aldershot is now known as the 'Home of the British Army'. In more recent history Aldershot was given the prestigous title of most popular place to live in Britain, in 2007.

There are many places of interest in Aldershot including Aldershot Military Museum, Airborne Forces Museum, Princes Hall Theatre, the Rural Life Centre, Arlington Stadium (to view Banger and Stock car racing), Alpine Snowsports Centre for winter fun all year round and Aldershot Lido unfortunately for summer fun only. Home games for Aldershot Town FC, currently in League 2, can be viewed at The Ebb Stadium, close to Aldershots High Street.
