Overview of Alton

The town of Alton is located West of Gatwick airport a distance of 53 miles that would take just over an hour by taxi via the M25 and A31. It is situated in the county of Hampshire and located on the source of the River Wey, making it the highest town in the county.

The name is derived from the an Anglo-Saxon word "aewielltun" meaning farmstead at the source of the river. In 1086, Alton is listed in the Doomsday Book as having the most valuable recorded market in the country and it is still a well known market town today. The Battle of Alton (1643) was fought during the English Civil War, with a small group of Royalists being forced into the Church of St Lawrence by a rather more significant number of Parliamentary Army officers. Bullet holes from this battle are still visible in the church. Alton has a long history of Brewing also, hops and barley from surrounding areas were malted in the town, with breweries dating back to 1763. Currently Coors Brewing Company (producers of Carling, Grolsh and Worthington) are based in the town. Alton is also home to Treloar College, the National Specialist College for Young Disabled People.
