Overview of Ashford
The town of Ashford is located East of Gatwick airport a distance of 58 miles that would take just over an hour by taxi via the M25, M26 and M20. It is situated in the county of Kent and lies on the Great Stour River.
The name is derived from the Old English word 'aescet' indicating a ford near a clump of Ash trees. Ashford as a market town has for centuries been a local communications hub for surrounding villages and has stood at the centre of five railway lines since the 19th century (Ashford to Ramsgate, Swanley to Ashford, South Eastern Main Line, Kent Coast Line and Marshlink Line). Also the new High Speed 1 line from London to the Channel Tunnel now runs through Ashford. Mainly due its location, Ashford has historically been a strong Agricultural and Market town, with Livestock markets recorded very early in the towns history.
There are many places of interest in Ashford including Godington House and Gardens, Willesborough Windmill, South of England Rare Breeds Centre, Ashford Borough Museum, as well as shopping at the County Square Shopping Centre and Ashford Designer Outlet.
