Overview of Axminster

The town of Axminster is located South of Bristol airport a distance of 55 miles that would take around 1 hour 13 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A358. The town is built on a hill overlooking the River Axe which heads towards the English Channel at Axmouth. At the 2001 census, it had a population of 5,626.

The name Axminster is most commonly associated with a type of carpet. An Axminster-type power loom is capable of weaving high quality carpets with many varying colours and patterns. While Axminster carpet was initially made in the town by Thomas Whitty in 1755, this type of carpet is now manufactured all over the world. Axminster has historically been a popular coaching stop, originating from its location on 2 major Roman Roads (around 300BC) through to the 1700's as located on the main coaching route between London and Exeter. In 1760 a coaching inn named The George Hotel was opened on the corner of Lyme Street and Chard Street, over 16 coaches a day would stop at the hotel in its heyday for refreshments and to change horses. Today the town is also well served by rail, with the Waterloo- Exeter services every hour.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall of "River Cottage" TV fame has his River Cottage Canteen located in the town, nestled amongst many other individual shops and businesses. Just a short drive away, Lyme Regis resort with its Jurassic Coastline continuing towards Seaton and the fossil beach of Charmouth can be reached.
