Overview of Aylesbury

The town of Aylesbury is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 75 miles that would take around 1 hour 20 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A41. It is situated in the county of Buckinghamshire and contains a large number of historic buildings and landmarks.

The name is thought to be of Old English origin, meaning 'Fort of Aegel', though who Aegel was is not recorded. In 1985, excavations took place in the Town and they found an Iron Age hillfort dating back to the early 4th Century BC. Since then, Aylesbury has played a part in many historical events such as the Norman Conquest (the king took the manor of Aylesbury for himself), the English Civil War (when it became a stronghold for the Parliamentarian forces), Louis XVIII's exile residence in 1810 and in more recent times the nearby location of The Great Train Robbery of the 1960's. In amongst all this Aylesbury has also built itself a reputation as a strong Market town, originally on the trade route from London to the SouthWest, the Town still holds its Market- 4 days a week, on the cobbles of Market Square, just as it has for hundreds of years.

There are many places of interest in Aylesbury including The Roald Dahl Childrens Gallery, Waterside Theatre, Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire Railway Centre and Boarstall Tower. Also a number Canal cruises are on offer on the Towns waterways.
