Overview of Aylesbury

The town of Aylesbury is located West of Stansted airport at a distance of 66 miles that would take around 1 hour 10 minutes by taxi via the M11 and M25. It is the county town of Buckinghamshire in the outskirts of the London Commuter Belt and has a population of 56,392 according to the 2001 Census.

The history of Aylesbury can be traced back to the Iron Age the town sitting on the site of a hillfort dating from around 650BC. In Anglo-Saxon times it was a major market town of strategic importance and at the Norman Conquest the King took the manor which was consequently listed as a royal manor in the Domesday Book, 1086. Henry VIII favoured the town and he granted it county town status in 1529 transferring it from the former county town of Buckingham. Aylesbury has some notable places of significance such as the world famous Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Roald Dahl children's Gallery and Guttemann Sports Centre.

Some popular attractions of the town include St Marys Church, the Kings Head Inn-one of the surviving handful of public houses owned by the National Trust, The Queens Park Centre-the UK's largest independent arts centre and Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. The town has been connected to Henry VIII having courted Anne Boleyn at the Kings Head and Roald Dahl had worked on some of his famous classic childrens tales in the area.
