The area was once mainly made up of council built houses created in the interwar years of 1921-1939 but has benefited in recent years from large investments and integration into the Thames Gateway Zone a site designated for redevelopment.
The borough is comprised of the neighbourhoods of Barking, Becontree, Becontree Heath, Castle Green, Chadwell Heath, Creekmouth, Dagenham, Dagenham Dock, Marks Gate and Rush Green. Some notable visitor attractions include the remains of a Benedictine Abbey, Eastbury Manor House and Valence House Museum.
