Overview of Barking

The town of Barking is located South of Stansted airport at a distance of 31 miles that would take around 35 minutes by taxi via the M11. It is located in East London within the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and has a population of 165,500 according to the 2001 Census.

Barking was historically a fishing and agrarian settlement in the county of Essex and was formerly a large ancient parish of 12,307 acres. From the 14th century fishing was the most important industry aswell as boat building including making repairs the ships of Henry VIII. The fishing industry collapsed in the 1860s which led to new employers moving into the area and new industries began to emerge. Barking Abbey is a ruined Anglo-Saxon Abbey and a site of historical importance in the area, built in 666AD many items of archeological interest were discovered which exhibited at Valence House Museum.

There are many cultural and leisure attractions in Barking including The curfew Tower, The Parish Church of St Margaret, The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Eastbury Manor House, Barking Town Hall, Town Quay and the Millennium Centre. There are plenty of parks and nature reserves and sporting activities such as horse riding, walking and cycling.
