The name Barnet was derived from the old english word 'baernet' meaning 'land cleared by burning' and it is the second largest Borough in London. At Hendon is the Hendon Aerodrome and Royal Air Force Museum which in its past has played an important role in British Aviation. The main landmarks in the Borough include the listed buildings of the Church of St Jude, Hampstead Garden Suburb and Church Farmhouse Museum. The areas of Golders Green, Finchely and Hendon have a large Jewish community that dates back to the 19th Century when they settled in London following Nazi persecution in Europe, here you will find the Jewish Museum that describes these events.
