Overview of Barnstaple

Barnstaple is a town in North Devon and only 187 miles south west of Heathrow airport. This journey should take about 3 hours 30 minutes by taxi in normal traffic conditions. From Heathrow airport a direct route into Barnstaple would be the M3, A303 followed by the A361 into the town. Barnstaple is only 50 miles from Taunton, 57 miles from Plymouth and 50 miles from Newton Abbot.

As one of the beautiful towns in Devon, Barnstaple has a population of 30765 residents according to the 2001 Census. It is situated between Dartmoor and Exmoor both National Parks within North Devon. The town has many places to visit for tourists and visitors who have a choice of visiting beautiful neighbouring towns and the coast which is very nearby.

From Barnstaple there are many other places to visit such as the harbours of Ilfracombe, Clovelly and Lynmouth. Exmoor with stunning wild moorlands has red deer and wild ponies, there are guided walks and Exmoor safaris to help explore the landscape and nature. The wilderness of Dartmoor is another place to sightsee with beautiful and picturesque thatched houses and woodlands, and a history dating back to prehistoric times. For a day at the beach Woolacombe has awards for its cleanliness and popularity as a family holiday resort, with a range of outdoor activities to do such a surfing, Kayaking, boat trips and horse riding. The closest beach to the town itself is called Saunton Sands ideal for a day out with walking trails and sporting activities.

There are many places to shop in Barnstaple, the Pannier Market in the High Street that dates back to Saxon times and is open and selling food, general goods, crafts, antiques and books almost everyday of the week. There are also larger national stores to browse in and restaurants and nightclubs for the evening entertainment. Festival and theatrical activities began in the town during the 15th century where a broad range of traders would go to the busy trading port. Barnstaples first theatre was built in 1760 and today is the Queens Theatre with a range of many interesting plays and performances. There is also The Landmark theatre in Ilfracombe not far from the Seafront which is also an excellent place for a night of entertainment.

North Devon College is based in Barnstaple and is a tertiary college, the Universities within close proximity of the town would be Exeter university and Plymouth university both popular choices to students all over the country with various undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
