Overview of Bath
The city of Bath is located West of Gatwick airport, at a distance of 130 miles that would take around 2 hours 20 minutes minutes by taxi via the M25 and M4. Bath is a city in Somerset in the south west of England and is sited at the bottom of the Avon Valley, near the southern edge of the Cotswolds. The hills that surround and make up the city have a maximum altitude of 780 feet on the Lansdown plateau. The surrounding hills give Bath its steep streets and make its buildings appear to climb the slopes.
According to the census taken in 2001 the population of bath is about 80,000 residents. Bath was granted city status in 1590 by Queen Elizabeth I; in 1889 it was made a county borough which gave it administrative independence from its county of Somerset. The city became part of Avon when that county was created in 1974. Since 1996, when Avon was abolished, Bath has been the principal centre of the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset. Bath presents some of the finest architectural sights in Europe such as the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge alongside a diverse collection of museums and attractions. Some of these museums are; The Holburne Museum of Art and refurbished Victoria Art Gallery as well as the fascinating Bath Aqua Theatre of Glass where you can watch hand made glass works of art being created before your very eyes. There are many museums of all kinds to visit in this city.
The most renowned place to visit in bath is the roman baths, where the building was built as a temple and it was named Aquae Sulis. The Roman Baths building surrounds the naturally hot springs that have formed many years ago. Archaeological evidence shows that the site of the Roman Baths main spring was treated as a shrine by the Celts, and was dedicated to the goddess Sulis.Today, Bath has five theatres, Bath Theatre Royal, Ustinov Studio, the egg, the Rondo Theatre, and the Mission Theatre. Bath also has two universities and several schools and colleges.
