Overview of Bedford

The town of Bedford is located Northwest of Stansted airport at a distance of 47miles that would take around 1 hour 10 minutes by taxi via the A10 and A1. It is located in Bedfordshire and has a population of 80,000 according to 2005 statistics.

Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire and is thought to have been named after a Saxon chief called Beda and in 919 Edward the Elder built the town's first known fortress, on the south side of the River Ouse and this was later destroyed by the Danes and rebuilt by William II but this was also destroyed in 1224. During the Middle Ages it was a small agricultural town with wool being the local industry, from the 1560s it became one of the main lace making centres in England which continued until the 20th century. The town is divided into 10 areas including Brickhill, Castle, Cauldwell, De Parys, Goldington, Harpur, Kingsbrook, Newnham, Putnoe and Queens Park.

There are plenty of attractions on offer to tourists and visitors including The River Great Ousse, the Shuttleworth Collection, Priory Country Park, John Bunyan Museum, Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Paxton Pitts Nature Reserve. The town is also famous for its connections with John Bunyan author of Pilgrims Progress.
