Overview of Bexhill-on-Sea

The town of Bexhill-on-Sea is located South East of Gatwick airport a distance of 55 miles that would take just over an hour by taxi via the A23, A27 and A259. The town is in the county of East Sussex and is located on the coast road between Folkestone and Brighton.

The first reference to Bexhill, or Bexelei as it was originally called, was in a charter granted by King Offa of Mercia in 772AD. It is recorded that King Offa had 'defeated the men of Hastings' in 771AD. At this time, the term Hastings would have referred to this whole area rather than the town itself as we know it today. In the charter, King Offa established a church and religious community in Bexhill. During the Norman Conquest of 1066 it appears that Bexhill was largely destroyed. The Domesday survey of 1086 records that the manor of Bexhill was worth 20 before the conquest, and was now 'waste' and worth 18 10s by 1086. The church owned Bexhill Manor until Queen Elizabeth I acquired it in 1590 and granted it to Thomas Sackville, then Baron Buckhurst. Thomas became the first Earl of Dorset in 1603.

A Site of Special Scientific Interest lies within the Bexhill district- High Woods. It is of biological importance because it is the only known sessile oak 'Quercus petraea' woodland in East Sussex. Fossils are also commonly found in Bexhill. In 2009 the world's oldest spider web was found encased in amber in the town, it was 140 million years old.

There are many places of interest in Bexhill-on-Sea including The De La Warr Pavilion, brainchild of the ninth Earl De La Warr, opened in 1935 as one of the earliest examples of Modern architecture in a major British public building, Egerton Park homes a boating lake, childrens adventure playground, putting green and wildfowl lake set in beautifully looked after grounds, Bexhill Museum documents the towns historical battles and smuggling history as well as Bexhill's own seafront which has not been taken over by commercial enterprises and remains quite unspoilt.
