Overview of Bournemouth

The town of Bournemouth is located Southwest of Stansted airport a distance of 153 miles that would take around 2 hours 40 minutes by taxi via the M11, M25 and M3. It is a coastal town in the ceremonial county of Dorset and has a population of 168,100 according to 2010 statistics.

The Bournemouth area was mostly a remote and barren heathland in 1800 and there were no inhabitants or settlements at the mouth of the Bourne River, in Tudor times the area was used as a hunting estate called 'Stourfield Chase'. The town was expanded and developed in 1810 by Lewis Tregonwell who had anticipated its popularity as a seaside resort as sea-bathing was considered to have health benefits at this time, eventually the town gained a reputation as a spa town and established itself as an early tourist destination. With the arrival of the Railways in the 1900s the population had increased and railway connections meant summber visits to the town by visitors from the Midlands and London.

There are plenty of cultural and leisure attractions in the town including sporting events, seaside facilites, fishing, pony-trekking, cycling and water-sports, Bournemouth Pier, Central Gardens and The Russell-Cotes Museum. Famous visitors and residents to Bournemouth have included J.R.R Tolkien, Mary Shelley, Tony Hancock and Robert Louis Stevenson who had found creative inspiration in the peaceful, seaside surroundings.
