Overview of Braintree
The town of Braintree is located East of Stansted airport a distance of 17 miles that would take around 25 minutes by taxi via the A120 and B1256. The town is in the district of Essex and has a population of 42,394 according to the 2001 Census.
Braintree began as a small village over 4,000 years ago and developed into a flourishing Market town located at the crossroads of two Roman roads. It was desribed as Branchetreu in the Domesday book of 1085 and was in the possession of Richard, son of Count Gilbert. The town was famous for its wool and cloth trade in the 17th Century when this died out in early 19th century it was replaced by silk manufacturing. The Courtauld family had a strong influence in the town and supported building and local industry.
There are many attractions on offer for tourists and visitors in Braintree including, Blake House Craft Centre, Bardfield Vineyard, Boydells Dairy Farm, Braintree District Museum, Braintree & Bocking Public Gardens, Cressing Temple and The Original Great Maize Maze.
