Overview of Braunton
The village of Braunton is located South West of Bristol airport a distance of 90 miles that would take around 1 hour 52 minutes by taxi via the M5 and A361. It is situated in the county of Devon and is claimed to be the largest village in the West of England, with a population at the 2001 census of 7,510.
It is two miles from the sea and through the centre runs the Caen Stream a tributary of the Taw. It took its name from the Goidel saint, Brannock, who came from South Wales as a missionary and converted the native Britons to the christian faith in 550 A D. Brannock was a priest in the household of Brychan, king of Brencknock. The Estuary of the Taw and Torridge was wooded in those days. As also was a portion of Braunton Borrows. Here lived a tribe of Britons and Brannock settled among them, soon establishing a strong christian community. A christian church, the first North Devon was built at a spot near where the Caen stream began. The township, that grew up around this church, he named Brannockstood, which later became Braunton.
The village of Braunton is the gateway to North Devon's Golden Coast. The excellent shopping facilities and good selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants make Braunton an ideal base from which to explore the varied attractions of North Devon. The dramatic coastline and spectacular beaches of Saunton, Croyde and Putsborough with their golden sands, safe bathing and excellent surfing are all within a short drive.
