Overview of Brentwood
The town of Brentwood is located South of Stansted airport a distance of 28 miles that would take around 35 minutes by taxi via the B283 and B181. The town is situated in the Borough of Brentwood in Essex and has a population of 73,600 according to 2011 statistics.
The area was originally covered by the the Great Forest so there isnt much evidence of early settlements other than a bronze age axe that was found which indicates an entrenched encampment had existed at one time. It began as a clearing in the forest made by fire and was named 'Burnt Wood'. The Roman road from London to Colchester ran through the town but no remains have been found that would suggest they had settled there. The presence of the cult of St. Thomas the Martyr and a chapel was dedicated to him in the town which was a popular stopping point for Pilgrims on their way to Canterbury.
The town has many places of interest from cultural activities to heritage sites. Some of these include The ruins of the Chapel of Thomas Becket in the Town Centre, The Brentwood Museum, Weald Country Park and a number of countryside walks such as Warley, Thorndon, Navestock and Blackmore.
