Overview of Brighton

The City of Brighton is located South of Stansted airport a distance of 98 miles that would take around 1 hour 45 minutes by taxi via the M11 and M23. The town is situated on the South coast of Britain and has a population of 155,919 according to 2007 statistics.

Brighton began as a small village in Saxon times, they had founded Sussex and called the settlement Beorthelms tun, this later changed into Bristelmestune as it was recorded in the Domesday book and this settlement was burnt to the ground by French raiders in June 1514. Brighton had undergone much destruction from the effects of Englands wars with France and Holland and also by erosion from the sea and harsh coastal weather. By the 18th Century the town had grown in popularity due to the belief in the beneficial properties of seawater with health. After the Prince of Wales and his friends visited Brighton 1783 this put Brighton on the map as a fashionable resort for sea bathing and the town prospered.

Brighton has a large number of Landmarks and places of cultural interest such as Booth Museum of Natural History, Brighton Dome, Brighton Marina, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Brighton Pier, Brighton Clocktower and the Brighton Wheel. Some of the best ways to see the city would be by one of the sightseeing buses or guided city walks, and there are even tours available by aircraft or by boat.
