Overview of Camberley

The town of Camberley is located North West of Stansted airport a distance of 81 miles that would take around 1 hour 30 minutes by taxi via the M11 and M25. It is located in Surrey, close to the borders of Hampshire and Berkshire and has a population of 30,155 according to 2011 statistics.

Until the late 18th century Camberley had been known as Bagshot Heath and had remained undeveloped due to its sandy soil making it unsuitable for farming. As a barren heathland it attracted highwaymen such as William Davies and Claude Duval. During the 19th Century came expansion due to the establishment of the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy in 1812 and a new town rose around it called Yorktown. Another new settlement was named Cambridge Town but to avoid confusion with the Univerity town of Cambridge it was re-named Camberley in 1877. With the railways the town gained a reputation as a health resort with visitors flocking there to sample the fresh air.

There are many things to do while visiting Camberley including The Atrium-which has shopping and leisure facilities, The Basingstoke Canal-offering boat trips and a tow path for walking, Frimley Lodge Park-can offer woodland walks, childrens playgrounds and miniature railway.
