Gatwick Airport is 94 miles south of Cambridge and can be accessed via the M11, M25 and the M23. This journey in normal traffic conditions should take approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Overview of Cambridge
Cambridge is most commonly known as a university town and it is also the administrative centre of the county of Cambridge. Situated approximately 50 miles north of London Cambridge it is the heart of High technology centre silicon fen .
Cambridge is most renowned for the University of Cambridge this includes the well known places such as Cavendish lab, Kings College chapel and the university library.
According to the census completed in 2001 Cambridge has a population of 108,863 residents, and over 22,000 of these residents are students.
History
Settlements have existed in this part of East Anglia since before the Roman Empire. The earliest evidence is a 3,500 year old Farmstead which was discovered at the site of Fitzwilliam College. The first Major development of Cambridge was during the Roman invasion in 40AD. The castle hill was used as a military outpost defending against the river cam. After the Romans had departed the Saxons took over. During this time Cambridge benefited from good trade links across hard-to-travel fenlands. When the Vikings arrived Cambridge rapidly grew due to their vigorous trading. During this time the centre of Cambridge had moved from castle hill to the right bank of the river called the Quayside.
How the University began
In 1209 students fled Oxford and formed a university in Cambridge. The oldest existing college is Peterhouse, this was built in 1284. In 1534 Cambridge university press was issued with a printing license. Hobson's Conduit was the first project to bring clean drinking water to the town centre this was built in 1610, and parts of this survive today. In 1766 Addenbrooke's Hospital was founded.
Despite having a university Cambridge was not granted city charter until 1951.
Cambridge Today
During the 1960s-1970s, the city s capacity greatly increased by several large council estates that planned to hold London overspill. Now Cambridge is one of East Anglia s major settlements.
Theatre
Cambridge's main theatre is the Arts Theatre, a venue with 666 seats in the town centre. The theatre often has touring shows, as well as those by local companies. There are also many amateur theatre groups in Cambridge, often producing plays of a very high standard. The ADC Theatre is managed by the University of Cambridge, and typically has 3 shows a week during term time.
