An overview of Cardiff
Cardiff was made the capital of Wales in 1955, after only having become a city in 1905. In recognition of its economic wealth and prosperity. cardiff is situated on the River Taff and surrounded on three sides by hills that run down to Cardiff Bay. Cardiff began live as a Roman fort in 75 AD, and grew steadily as a settlement until the industrial revolution. In 1536 Wales was joined to England symbolically in the Act of Union. In 1830 the building of Cardiffs dockyards was begun. These were used to transport coal from the Valleys around the world. Coal was brought by pack horse, and later by canal and the Taff Vale railway, from Merthyr Tydfil. This was then loaded on to ships in the Port and exported via Tiger Bay. Today Cardiff is the major centre in Wales for finance and business industries. Tertiary industries have made up 75% of Cardiff's business expansion since the 1980's.The Devolution Bill was passed in 1999, this granted Wales its own self governance, and the newly created Welsh Assembley was created, and now has its home in Cardiff Bay. Cardiff generates 20% of the contries Gross National Product (GNP), and is a major draw for workers in the surrounding area.
English is the prodominat language spoken in Cardiff. Welsh is spoken by 11% of the population. Welsh, English, Latin, Norman-French and Norse have all been widely spoken throughout Cardiff's history. Cardiff has a diverse community with several mosques, synnogoges, and churches serving the needs of the community. One study found that 94 different languages are spoken in Cardiff.
Cardiff is situatied 140 miles from London, which lies to its East. Cardiff has excellent rail connections to the capital and along the Welsh coast towards Carmarthen and Tenby,as well as further north, allowing you to explore the Valley country.
