Overview of Chatham

The town of Chatham is located East of Gatwick airport a distance of 44 miles that would take around 50 minutes by taxi via the M25, M26 and M20. Nearest towns are Strood, Gillingham, Maidstone and Gravesend. It is one of the Medway towns within the Medway Unitary Authority, and has a population of 70,540 according to the 2001 census.

The town has been a military town over the ages with Henry VIII using the River Medway to Moor his navy ships over the winter later being established as a Royal Dockyard by Queen Elizabeth I in 1568. Expansion continued up until the 19th Century with ships being built and launched there. Later there would be fortifications made to protect from attack such as Napoleonic Fort Amherst. The Dockyard closed in the 1980s due to the units being moved elsewhere and today there are many historic sights to see in the town such as Ordnance Terrace the former home of Charles Dickens, St Marys Church, Chatham Maritime and St Georges Church resting place for hundreds of Napoleonic prisoners of war.

Things to do in Chatham could include shopping in the wide range of shops in the high street and in the Pentagon centre which also has a bowling alley. Many tourists go to the town to see the Historic Dockyard which contains a number of historic vessels and museums. From the dockyard you can travel to Upnor Castle an Elizabethan artillery Fortress built on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I in 1559 to defend her warships moored on the river and Chatham Dockyard. It is located on the banks of the river medway and is a stunning sight with fabulous views across the river, offering tranquil walks along the riverside. There are plenty of restaurants and pubs for evening entertainment or why not venture to some of the other areas nearby with places of interest such as Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Gallery, Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury, Leeds Castle in Maidstone or Leigh on Sea Beach.
