Overview of Chippenham

Chippenham is a market town in Wiltshire and has a population of 28,065 according to the 2001 Census. It is located between Marlborough downs to the east and the Cotswolds to the north-west and the Salisbury plains are located to the south.

Chippenham is situated 30 minutes south west of Swindon, 25 minutes north of Trowbridge, 25 minutes north east of Bath and 25 minutes south east of Chipping Sodbury.

The town of Chippenham is situated at a crossing on the river Avon and is believed to have been a settlement since before the Roman times.

As Chippenham is just 4 miles from the M4 it has excellent links to Wales, Bristol, Swindon and London. Its railway station is also on the mainline route between Paddington station in London and the West Country.

When the great western railway arrived in 1841 the economy of the town evolved into a commuter town. In more recent years the population has seen expansion due to the building of new housing estates.

Chippenham is twinned with La Fleche in France and Friedberg in Germany.
