Overview of Colchester

Colchester is a town and the largest settlement in the borough of Colchester. In the 2001 census the town had a population of 104,390 residents. The town is situated 56 miles north east of London and is connected by the A12 and the Great Eastern Mainline railway.

Ipswich is situated 17 miles north east of Colchester, and Chlemsford is sited 24 miles south west of the town. Other close by town include Braintree which is 17 to the West and Clacton-on-sea which is 15 miles south east of the town.

Colchester is also a very historic town as it is thought to be the oldest recorded Roman settlement in the British Isles; the town is mentioned by Pliny the Elder, who died in AD 79. The main landmark in Colchester is Colchester castle which is an 11th century Norman keep built over a Roman Temple.

Colchester is reputed to be the home of 3 of the most well known nursery rhymes such as Old king cole, Humpty Dumpty, and Twinkle, twinkle little star.

Interesting places to visit: Colchester Zoo which is based on the outskirts of the town. There are also three main museums, the castle museum inside the castle which displays Roman exhibits, the Hollytree s museum which contains children s exhibits and the Natural history museum located inside the former all saints church. Colchester s significant landmarks include the town hall and the jumbo water tower.
