Overview of Colchester

The town of Colchester is located East of Stansted airport a distance of 34 miles that would take around 45 minutes by taxi via the A120 and B1256. It is located in the Borough of Colchester in Essex and has a population of 104,390 according to the 2001 Census.

The town was founded by the Romans and is said to be the oldest recorded town in Britain. It was known as Camulodunum to the Romans and was a provincial Roman capital of Britain, after it was attacked and destroyed by Boadicea in 60-61AD the Roman captial was moved to London. By the 9th Century it was known as Cair Colun and was listed as one of Englands 30 most important cities. By the Middle Ages it was a centre of the Woollen Trade, Many weavers and clothmakers came from Flanders to settle in the town and it became famed for the production of Bays and Says cloth.

There are many historical and cultural attractions in Colchester with major sights such as Colchester Castle and Museum, Hollytrees Museum, Colchester Arts Centre, Mercury Theatre and Colchester Zoo. The historic town centre includes a Saxon Church and the Roman Walls are still visible along Northgate Street. It has excellent railway connections into London by the Great Eastern Main Line.
