Overview of Cranbrook

The town of Cranbrook is located East of Gatwick airport a distance of 48 miles that would take around 57 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A21. Cranbrook is a small town in the county of Kent, South East England. Cranbrook has around 7,000 residents. It is the smallest town in Kent.

In medieval times, Cranbrook was a centre of the Wealden cloth industry; and iron-making was carried on at Bedgebury on the River Teise. The church here was dedicated to St Dunstan and was nicknamed the "Cathedral of the Weald", its 74 feet-high tower, completed in 1425. Cranbrook has had a number of watermills and windmills over the centuries. There were about seventeen watermills around Cranbrook, all on tributaries of the River Beult. And four windmills in Cranbrook only one of which survives today. This is Union Mill which was built for Henry Dobell in 1814. Kent County Council purchased the property in the 1960's and have restored it. The mill is kept in working order to this day, tours of the building are available. It stands mile (400 m) southeast of the towns church.

Cranbrook Museum, which is run by volunteers offers insight into life in this Wealden town, set in a historic and listed building and set in lovely gardens. Displays of rural life, costumes, toys, archaeology, geology and a massive Victorian collection of birds and eggs can be seen.It also notes the past history of the town, it's business', schools and former residents of note. Just outside the town you'll find Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest, which is a 9km square preserve of fairly unspoiled woods, with a Pinetum featuring many species of conifers and wildflowers, Bedgebury Forest also offers fine views and a wide variety of wildlife.
