The name of the borough comes from the town of Croydon at its centre, it has a history of being a small market town but has developed into one of the most populated areas on the fringes of the City. The borough is known as being an area to find leading businesses in finance, culture and entertainment. Some areas of the borough include Addington, Addiscombe, Coulsdon, New Addington, Selhurst, Shirley, Upper Norwood and Woodcote.
With only a 20 minute train ride into London it is also conveniently located near to the coastal town of Brighton, the main London to Brighton Road passes through the centre of Croydon. There is also a tram service running in the borough which makes a journey to Wimbledon only 20 minutes duration.
