Overview of Dartford

The town of Dartford is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 34 miles that would take around 38 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A226. Dartford is located in the county of Kent and is a prime commuter town, as it is only 16 miles from Central London.

The town centre is situated in a valley through which the River Darent flows, and where the old road from London to Dover crossed: hence the name, from Darent + ford. Dartford became a market town in medieval times and, although today it is principally a commuter town for Greater London, it has a long history of religious, industrial and cultural importance. Today it is an important rail hub and offers many great transport links into London and the surrounding areas.

Dartford was quite a hot spot for religious activity during the reformation in England in the 16th Century. Under the orders of Mary Tudor a great many Protestants were sentenced to death by burning in the town and they were exhibited in their final hours on top of East Hill before they were killed in an horrific manner. The Monument to Dartford Martyrs marks the spot where many of these people died during these dark days and gives tribute to a new found religious tolerance that developed shortly after these events in England. Dartford Heath is a large and beautiful piece of wild land on the edge of town. The heath is extremely wooded in places and has for generations been one of the primary places of rest and relaxation for the people of the town and also a waypoint for pilgrims and travellers en route to Canterbury and the Continent. The Queen Elizabeth Bridge is one of the largest road bridges in the United Kingdom and spans the River Thames. It is the most easterly river crossing of the great confluence before it meets the sea. The bridge which is 450 metres long was opened in 1991 to help ease congestion in the existing Dartford Tunnel which runs under the river. The bridge is without a doubt one of the most spectacular feats of engineering in the area.

There are plenty of attractions to visit in and around the Dartford Area, one way to take in town's sights is to follow The Darent Valley Walk, this charming walk follows the river through the town and takes in some of the best sights in the area. The river snakes past Central Park, the parish church and across the fields on the edge of the town. Copperfields Shopping Arcade is based around one of the older streets in the centre of Dartford. For many generations this area has been one of the focuses of the life of the town. The arcade has many smaller shops and independent retailers that one would not find in a usual high street or shopping centre. Dartford Borough Museum is a free facility provided by Dartford Borough Council to both residents of the area and the many visitors who come to the suburb from further a field. The facility is packed with interesting artifacts and exhibitions which chart the history of the town and surrounding area. The Orchard Theatre is a facility that throughout the year offers a great range of productions from the Christmas pantomime to serious drama by established and new writers and directors. The facility also has a great tradition of showing music and comedy events on a regular basis.
