Overview of Deal

The town of Deal is located Southeast of Stansted airport a distance of 103 miles that would take around 2 hours by taxi via the M11 and M2. It is a coastal town in Kent and has a population of 29,248 according to the 2001 Census.

The history of the town stretches back to the Roman Times and Julius Ceasar is said to have landed here in 55BC. It began as a small fishing village and grew into one of the busiest Ports in England, it was an important limb port of the Cinque ports and was a strategic point of defense in the past. There are 3 Tudor Castles: Sandown, Deal and Walmer Castles were all built along the Deal coast in 1539-1542 by Henry VIII due to the threat of invasion by France or Spain. The town has an extensive Maritime history and The Deal Maritime and Local History Museum describes and exhibits boats, smuggler galleys and model naval ships. Deal was also visited by Nelson and was where Captain Cook landed after his 1771 voyage to Australia.

The town is characterised by winding streets, Georgian Buildings, historic inns and markets. The coast of france is visible from the town on clear days and is only 25 miles away. There are many attractions for visitors such as Time Ball Tower Museum, Deal Memorial Bandstand, Deal Seafront and Promenade.
