Overview of Didcot

The town of Didcot is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 77 miles that would take around 1 hour 29 minutes by taxi via the M25, M4 and A4130. Didcot is just 10 miles south of Oxford and is located in the county of Oxfordshire (transferred from Berkshire in 1974).

Didcot first appears in historical records in the 13th century as Dudcotte, in Berkshire. The name is believed to be derived from that of the local abbot. Didcot was then a sleepy rural Berkshire village with a population of 100 or so and remained that way for hundreds of years, only occasionally cropping up in records. Parts of the original village still exist in the Lydalls Road area and part of All Saints' Church dates back to the 11th century. The Great Western Railway, engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, reached Didcot in 1839. In 1844 the Brunel-designed Didcot station was opened. The original station burnt down in the later part of 19th century. The more obvious location for the original line to Bristol would have been the town of Abingdon a little further north, but the landowner, Lord Wantage, is reputed to have prevented the railway coming close to his town. This and the junction of the Great Western line to Oxford created the conditions for the future growth of Didcot. Didcot was much smaller than several of its surrounding villages, which are now dwarfed by the modern town.

Didcot Railway Centre is home to a collection of over twenty Great Western Railway steam locomotives based in the original engine shed or under restoration in the locomotive works, together with Great Western carriages and wagons. There are Steamdays and special events throughout the year when you can ride on the steam trains. In the surrounding area you can also find The Living Rainforest which enables you to explore a rainforest without living the UK, it houses upto to 700 species of plants and animals. You can watch birds, lizards and butterflies roam free in the tropical glasshouses, also on site are a children s play area, cafe and shop.
