Overview of Dorking

The town of Dorking is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 13 miles that would take around 24 minutes by taxi via the A217 and A25. Dorking is a historic market town at the foot of the North Downs approximately 21 miles (34 km) south of London, in the county of Surrey.

Dorking began as a small staging post on Stane Street, the Roman road between London and Chichester on the English Channel. Dorking appears in Domesday Book of 1086 as the Manor of Dorchinges, it was held by William the Conqueror. Subsequent Lords of the Manor included the Dukes of Norfolk, who lived in Dorking until they moved to Arundel. In the medieval period, Dorking was a prosperous agricultural and market town, benefiting from its position on the junction of a number of important roads and tracks. In 1750, the construction of a turnpike road made Dorking a staging post on the route to Brighton and the coast. Dorking held a big wheat and cattle market in the High Street. The poultry market was held in the corner of South Street and round Butter Hill. Here the famous Dorking fowl were sold. This breed, which has 5 claws instead of the normal four, was a favourite for 19th century tables, including that of Queen Victoria. Dorking lost its stagecoaches when the railways arrived, but then attracted wealthy residents who built large houses in and around Dorking, such as Denbies House and Pippbrook House.

Places of interest in Dorking include The National Trust owned tower at Leith Hill, which is set amongst beautiful countryside, woods and heathlands it offers amazing views and great walks. Denbies Wine Estate provides tours and tastings at there well positioned Vineyard, aswell as a cafe, a restaurant and farm shop with local produce. Bury Hill Fisheries is an excellent spot for a days Carp Fishing, while the Dorking Museum and Heritage Centre houses a large number of paintings by well known local artists and provides an interesting insight into Dorkings history.
