Overview of Egham

The town of Egham is located Southwest of Stansted airport a distance of 67 miles that would take around 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is located in Surrey and is part of the London Commuter Belt being only 20 miles from Central London and has a population of 5,724 according to the 2001 Census.

The town was mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086 and was formerly held by Chertsey Abbey until the Dissolution of the Monestaries when it became the property of the Crown. It was a busy coaching town in the 18th and 19th centuries, and famously at nearby Runnymede the Magna Carter was sealed in 1215 which is commemorated by a memorial at the foot of Coopers Hill. At one time the area was a centre for horse racing, with races being held at Runnymede Meadow, today nearby racecourses are at Ascot and Windsor.

The town has a number of tourist attractions and is a popular place for shopping, on the outskirts of the town is the large and ornate Royal Holloway Building which was built as a college for women, there is also the John F Kennedy Memorial, an acre of land which was given to the people of America in memory of President John F. Kennedy. Other places of interest including chertsey Museum, Runnymede and Thorpe Park.
