Overview of Enfield

The London Borough of Enfield is located Southeast of Luton Airport a distance of around 28 miles a journey that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the M10 and M25. It is an outer London borough situated next to the boroughs of Barnet, Haringey and Waltham Forest and has a population of 313,900 according to 2011 statistics.

The history of Enfield can be traced back to Roman times and Ermine Street is the famous road which linked London with Lincoln and York. In the 1900s artefacts were found in Edmonton and Bush Hill Park which were left behind by the Romans when they had occupied these areas. In the 13th Century a charter was decreed by Edward I to hold a weekly market and Enfield Chase was once a Royal deer park and former hunting ground for the Kings of england. Modern Industries in the borough have included the manufacture of the Enfield rifle and was standard issue for the British Army, colour TVs by Ferguson, the first dishwasher was produced at the former Hotpoint plant and Enfield was chosen to have the worlds first ATM installed in 1967.

There are many attractions in Enfield to interest visitors including Edmonton Green Shopping centre, Pymmes Park, Forty Hall Museum - ideal to learn about local history, the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture, Whitewebbs Museum of Transport and Capel Manor Gardens and Horticultural college.
