Overview of Epping

The town of Epping is located South of Stansted airport a distance of 17 miles that would take around 28 minutes by taxi via the B183. It is a market town located in the County of Essex and has a population of 11,047 according to the 2001 Census.

The town was known as 'Epinga' in the Domesday book of 1086 and this area is now known as Epping Upland. The village is surrounded by the woodland of Epping Forest and it seperates the outer London boroughs from the town. The name is derived from the Anglo Saxon 'Ep' meaning up and 'Ing' meaning cultivated lands. The town has a Conservation Area of listed buildings and some timber framed buildings from the 17th Century. In 1253 Henry III had given the town the right to hold a weekly market which helped establish trading in the area, and there are ancient market routes and cattle drovers lanes that stretch as far as Wales and Norfolk.

There are many places of interest in Epping and is a popular place for commuters due to it location so close to the city of London which is only 18 miles away. The town has an attractive high street with St Johns Church tower in the centre and has a rural village atmosphere.
