Overview of Farnborough
The town of Farnborough is located Southwest of Stansted airport a distance of 83 miles that would take around 1 hour and 30 minutes by taxi via the M11, M25 and M4. It is located in Hampshire and has a population of 57,147 according to the 2001 Census.
The name comes from Ferneberga meaning 'fern hill' it was given by Alfred the Great to his nephew in 901 and was later held by the monastery at Winchester. The town is home to St Michaels Abbey which was built by the Empress Eugenie as the resting place of Napoleon III and her family. The old parish church of St Peters has a crypt containing the graves of the Earls of Anglesey and wall paintings of various saints that date back to the 13th century. Local landmarks include the Clockhouse on Farnborough Road and Farnborough Airfield which is the site of the Royal Aircraft Establishment.
The town has many attractions to offer visitors including the Farnborough Airshow, shopping areas at Kingsmead, Queensmead and Princesmead, The Farnborough Leisure Centre, Titchfield Haven Nature Reserve, Thorpe Park and Windsor Castle.
