Overview of Farnham

The town of Farnham is located Southwest of Stansted airport a distance of 90 miles that would take around 1 hour and 40 minutes by taxi via the M11, M25 and M4. It is located in Surrey within the Borough of Waverley and has a population of 38,000 according to the 2001 Census.

The history of the town spans back thousands of years to the Stone Age when hunters used the area and there is also evidence to suggest settlers from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. During Roman times the area was an important centre for pottery due to the abundance of gault clay and Kilns dating from about AD 100 have been found throughout the area. When the Saxons arrived they named the town Fearnhamme, 'Fearn' in reference to the fern and woodlands and 'Hamme' to the water meadows. Soon after the Norman Conquest the Castle was built to the purpose of providing accommodation for the Bishop of Winchester, its presence also helped provide a marketplace for farms and small industries in the town. From the middle ages the woollen industry began to flourish and other trades emerged such as cloth making, processing wheat into flour and the cultivation of hops for beer brewing.

There are many cultural and leisure activities on offer in Farnham, including the Museum of Farnham, Rural Life Centre, Farnham Castle, Waverley Abbey and Farhnham Maltings which holds music concerts, cinema and comedy shows. Farnham borders on the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so there are plenty of attractive places to walk and enjoy the Surrey countryside.
