Overview of Felixstowe

The town of Felixstowe is located East of Stansted airport a distance of 60 miles that would take around 1 hour and 10 minutes by taxi via the A120 and A12. It is a seaside town located in Suffolk and has a population of 29,349 according to the 2001 Census.

The town is best known for having the largest container port in Britain and it is situated across the estuary of the Orwell and Stour rivers from Harwich. The history of the settlement can be traced back to before the Roman Conquest and used to be known by the name of Walton changing its name to Felixstowe in the 13th century. It played an important role in Englands defense and in 1540 Landguard Fort was built to guard the entrance into Harwich. It was only developed as a port in 1886 and when the Railway arrived in Felixstowe it became a popular seaside resort.

There are many things on offer to tourists including The Harwich Harbour Ferry, Felixstowe Museum, The Spa Pavilion Theatre, Felixstowe Market and Landguard Fort. It has a sandy beach, pier, seafront amusements and promenade and coastal walks can be taken along the 50-mile long Suffolk Coast and Heaths Path.
