Overview of Gatwick

The town of Gatwick is located South of Stansted airport a distance of 72 miles that would take around 1 hour and 15 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is located north of the centre of Crawley in West Sussex and is Londons second largest International airport.

The name came from 'Gatwik' which was the name of a manor that was on the site of todays airport and it was owned by the De Gatwick family. In the 19th Century the successive owners sold the area to the Gatwick Race Course Company and in the 1920s part of the area began being used as an aerodrome which eventually led to the evolution of the major international airport that exists today. Many major airlines operate from Gatwick and it is the second busiest airport by total passenger traffic in the UK after Heathrow.

The airport has two terminals North and South with plenty of facilities for passengers including shops, restaurants, childrens facilities, conference and business centre and a number of themed Lounges for a variety of needs. The terminals are connected by a shuttle to transfer passengers and the nearest major road is the main M23 motorway which connects with London's orbital motorway, the M25 that gives access to much of Greater London and beyond.
