An overview of Gloucester

Gloucester is situated on the River Severn, between the cities of Bristol and Birmingham, on the M5 spine connecting the north and south of Britain. It is a port and is linked by canal workings to the Severn Estuary. It started out as a Roman settlemant, before the Saxon invaders arrived. Today it is most noted for its contribution to the aerospace industry.

Gloucester is located close to the Cotswold Hills and the Forest of Dean, and makes an excellent base for exploring this part of the world. Gloucester Cathedral is one of its main tourist attractions, and the market square used to be a cattle market in Medievel times.

Rather unfairly Gloucester is oftern linked in the nations consiousness to crime. Moors Murderers Fred and Rosemary West lived in the city and killed 12 women and young girls between 1967 - 1987. This obviously shocked and saddened the rural community.

On a lighter note Gloucester is famous for its annual World Famous Cheese Rolling Contest. Brave volunteers throw themselves down a steep local hill in order to catch an 8lb Gloucester Cheese. The winner- despite their injuries- is allowed to keep the cheese.
