Overview of Greenwich

The London Borough of Greenwich is located Southeast of Luton Airport a distance of around 57 miles a journey that would take around 1 hour 10 minutes by taxi via the M1 and M25. It is an inner london borough and was formed in 1965 by the amalgamation of the metropolitan borough of Greenwich and Woolwich, it has a population of 255,500 according to 2011 statistics.

The borough lies on the south bank of the River Thames, stretching from Greenwich to Thamesmead encompassing Blackheath, Carlton, Woolwich and Plumstead. Because of the bends in the river the waterfront is 8.5 miles in length. Central Greenwich town is located in the middle and contains a World Heritage Site that is comprised of The Royal Naval College designed by Sir Christopher Wren for Charles II and the Royal Observatory located in Greenwich Park. Greenwich led the world in maritime and scientific traditions which resulted in the Greenwich Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time being adopted as world standards.

Greenwich is a tourist destination to visitors from all over the world, with key sites being Cutty Sark, Royal Observatory, Greenwich Market, The O2 Entertainment Venue and Greenwich Theatre. There is also many events, live music, theatre, clubbing and restaurants to choose from and it has convenient transport links into central London.
