Overview of Greenwich

The town of Greenwich is located South of Stansted airport a distance of 37 miles that would take around 45 minutes by taxi via the B181 and M11. It is located in southeast London within the Royal Borough of Greenwich and has a population of 254,600 according to 2011 statistics.

The towns history can be traced back to the Bronze Age and evidence has also been found from the Saxons and the Romans. Greenwich began as a fishing town and gradually became a royal favourite eventually becoming the site of a royal palace called the Palace of Placentia from the 15th Century. It became a popular resort in the 17th Century and many grand houses were built and by the 16th century naval shipbuilding was taking place along the Thames and produced many of Britains warships until 1869. With both royal and maritime connections the town has alot to offer visitors with attractions such as the National Maritime Museum, Queens House, Royal Observatory, Old Royal Naval College and the Cutty Sark.

There are plenty of leisure activites available in Greenwich including walks in the famous Greenwich Park-Londons Oldest Royal Park, historic Greenwich Market and many entertainment venues such as Greenwich Theatre and The O2 Arena.
