Overview of Hackney

The London Borough of Hackney is located East of Heathrow airport a distance of 22 miles that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the M4 and A4. It is situated in inner London and has a population of 246,300 according to 2011 Statistics.

Hackney is located north of the River Thames to the northeast of the City, some of its famous streets include Petticoat Lane, Brick Lane and Ridley Road. Hackney Central is the main retail, commercial and historical Centre in the borough and was formerly called Hackney Village it took ,its name from the old english 'haca' and 'eg' meaning 'Island of a man called Haca' and in 1198 it was recorded as Hakeneia.

The borough has an extensive history with most of the land being formerly Catuvellauni tribal territory and covered open oak and hazel woodlands. The village of Hackney flourished in Tudor times as a rural retreat for nobility and the first Theatres were built in Shoreditch. Some noteworthy places of interest within its boundaries include Geffrye Museum, Hackney Empire and Sutton House.
