Overview of Harlow

The town of Harlow is located North of Gatwick airport a distance of 62 miles that would take around 1 hour 10 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M11. Harlow is deemed a New Town and is located in the county of Essex, on the Essex/Hertfordshire border, and forms part of the London commuter belt.

Harlow (the new town) was built after World War II to ease overcrowding in London. Though there is large amounts of evidence showing habitation and dwellings in this area as far back as 2000BC. The master plan for the new town was drawn up in 1947 by Sir Frederick Gibberd. The development incorporated the market town of Harlow, now a neighbourhood known as Old Harlow, and the villages of Great Parndon, Latton, Tye Green, Potter Street, Churchgate Street, Little Parndon, and Netteswell. The town is divided into neighbourhoods, each self-supporting with their own shopping precincts, community facilities and pub. Harlow has one of the most extensive cycle track networks in the country, connecting all areas of the town to the town centre and industrial areas. The cycle network is composed mostly of the original old town roads. As with the majority of commuter belt towns Harlow has great transport links to the city and surrounding areas, it is served by two railway stations, Harlow Town railway station and Harlow Mill railway station, is just off Junction 7 of the M11 motorway and is a regional hub for the Bus network.

Aswell as the shops and eateries of the town centre, there are many places of interest in Harlow, such as the The Gibberd Garden, full of unique plantings and sculptures, organised events such as Snowdrop Sundays, Autumn colour and Live music are held in the gardens also. The Museum of Harlow, tells the story of Harlow through Roman, Saxon, Georgian and Victorian times. Science Alive, at the Leisurezone, is an educational and safe place for children to play and learn. Harlow Playhouse hosts many different performances including drama, music, comedy, dance and family productions.
