Overview of Harlow

The town of Harlow is located Southwest of Stansted Airport a distance of around 17 miles a journey that would take around 25 minutes by taxi via the M11. It is located in Essex and forms part of the commuter belt and has a population of 78,889 according to the 2010 statistics.

The original town was known as Old Harlow mentioned in the Domesday Book and was largely a rural community. The history of the area dates back to the Mesolithic era and much evidence has been found including tools, Axeheads and flints indicating organised industry daring from 5000 BC to 2000 BC. The new town was established after World War II to help with the overflow from the heavily populated London. The town was designed to suit the modern urban way of life and has one of Britains first pedestrianised shopping precincts and an extensive network of pedestrian pathways and cycle tracks. There are numerous green areas including a town park which spans 165 acres. The town also has industrial manufacturing sites and retail premises offering local employment but many residents commute into London or northwards towards Cambridge.

The town has a number of activities and attractions to offer visitors including a theatre called The Playhouse, The Square music venue, Staple Tye shopping centre and a selection of nightclubs, bars and restaurants.
