Overview of Harwich
The town of Harwich is located East of Stansted Airport a distance of around 53 miles a journey that would take around an hour by taxi via the A120. It is located in Essex and is one of the Haven Ports, it has a population of 15,500 according to the 2001 Census.
The name is derived from 'here-wic' meaning 'military settlement' in old english. The town dates back to possibly the Roman era and although it is small in size most of the older part of the town is a conservation area with many examples of architectural heritage from the 18th Century. With the arrival of the Railway line from Colchester in 1854 it gained a new status for travellers and additions were made to the town including a number of attractive hotels. The town became a naval base in 1657 and was heavily fortified and has a long maritime history both civil and military.
